College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, Huskies versus Friars
Red-hot Huskies meet Friars in Providence
Providence, RI (Sports Network) - The 13th-ranked Connecticut Huskies are one of the hottest teams in the nation, and they will collide with the Providence Friars tonight in a Big East Conference clash.
UConn has only lost once since January 17th, and the lone loss came by two points on the road to Villanova. Twelve of the last 13 outings have resulted in victory for the Huskies, who are 23-6 overall and 12-4 in conference play. They were most recently in action last Saturday when they recorded a 79-71 decision over West Virginia.
As for Providence, its respectable 14-14 overall record is overshadowed by a 5-11 mark in conference. The Friars are 9-4 at home, so there is some reason for optimism tonight. Also, they managed to halt a five-game overall skid with an 81-79 overtime win at Cincinnati on Sunday.
Providence beat UConn on January 17th by a 77-65 final, but the Huskies still own a 40-25 lead in the all-time series.
The leading scorer for UConn this season is A.J. Price, who is generating 15.0 ppg overall, including 16.8 ppg in Big East play. Price has dished out 175 assists against only 67 turnovers and is the key to the team's success. Jeff Adrien has been a steady force for the Huskies in recent years, and while he is not a flashy player by any means, it is hard to ignore his 15.0 ppg and 9.3 rpg. Jerome Dyson adds 13.1 ppg for the Huskies, while center Hasheem Thabeet checks in with 10.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg and a staggering total of 127 blocked shots. In Saturday's eight-point win over West Virginia, Price poured in 24 points on the strength of a 5-of-8 showing from three-point range. Adrien tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Stanley Robinson and Craig Austrie both had 12 points.
Jeff Xavier is scoring 12.1 ppg as the leading offensive performer for Providence, and Brian McKenzie is close behind with 11.4 ppg. Weyinmi Efejuku and Dwain Williams are both netting 11.0 ppg, and Geoff McDermott checks in with 10.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 131 assists. McDermott has also recorded 43 steals and blocked 32 shots, proof of his tremendous versatility. In the much-needed overtime win over Cincinnati last time out, McKenzie had 18 points. Marshon Brooks pitched in 15 points, and McDermott posted 13 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. The Friars also got 12 points from Xavier and 10 from Efejuku in what was a strong offensive performance. The fact that Providence won despite being outrebounded and outscored from the foul line is a credit to the team's strong defense, as it limited the Bearcats to 39.7 percent shooting from the field.
